“A feasibility study is being carried out by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, to assess Industrial Development Centres (IDC) across the country. Six of these 23 centers would be resuscitated to encourage development of SMEs.”
Hajiya Aisha Abubakar, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, stated when she toured the Industrial Development Centre in Benin City, the Edo State.
This is even as the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, said: “Gelegele Seaport development will serve as the gateway for exporting manufactured goods from the Benin Industrial Park under construction and other manufacturing companies in the region”
According to the Minister, when the IDCs are fully revived, they will serve as clusters for SMEs and boost employment and industrialisation.
Governor Obaseki, represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, said the state is putting up frameworks to ensure that SMEs form an integral part of the industrialisation drive in the state.
“There is need to support SMEs to encourage industrial growth. The real job opportunities are in SMEs. In Edo State, SMEs are needed to service the industrial park being developed,” he said.
Recall that the State government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) for the development of the Gelegele Seaport and other transport infrastructure in the state.
“Governor Obaseki signed the MoU on behalf of the State government while the Chairman of China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) Mr Lin Yichong, signed on behalf of the CHEC.”
