Nigerian Sugar Manufacturers import over 585Mmt Of Raw Sugar in Q1’2018

Nigerian Sugar manufacturers imported a total of over 585 Million metric tonnes of raw sugar from Brazil in the first quarter of 2018.
They also paid N1.8 billion levy to the federal government on the imported raw commodity for refining into cubes and granulated at their various mills in Lagos.
Data on sugar importation in the first quarter of 2018, January-March, obtained from the Sugar Council, National Sugar Development Council, showed that the three sugar refiners (Dangote Sugar, BUA Sugar and Golden Penny) discharged 232, 723+352,089 quantity of raw sugar through the Apapa and Tincan ports, in the first quarter under review.
A breakdown of the quantity of the commodity imported by each mills showed that Dangote Sugar accounted for 291.7 million metric tonnes, BUA Sugar 85,000 metric tonnes and Golden Penny 208.1million metric tonnes.
